Information for new clients

Congratulations on making a step toward your wellness. You are already connecting with your resilience and drive to grow. It can feel exciting and also scary to start a new therapy relationship and I commend your courage. Below you will find general information about the process of starting therapy with me.

To start therapy with me:

Please contact me by phone, email or by filling out the contact form if you are interested in working with me. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to assess whether I may be a good fit for your treatment needs.

The next step will be to schedule an initial evaluation session. This session will be around 55-60 minutes and will include assessment of your goals, symptoms and strengths. I will also inquire about your personal history and cultural identities. I will answer your questions about my approach to therapy and give you feedback about what I think might help you reach your goals. Sometimes we need two sessions to accomplish all this.

The initial evaluation is also opportunity for us to start getting to know each other in order to determine if we may be a good fit to work together. Determining fit is an important phase of therapy and I prefer not to rush this step. It may take us several more sessions (usually 3-5) to assess the workability of our relationship. If either of us determines that we are not a good fit to work together, I will provide you with referral options.

Once we schedule the initial appointment I will send you a link to electronic paperwork for you to complete before our first session.

*Please be aware that if you are currently actively suicidal I recommend that you seek out full model DBT treatment from another clinic. Full model DBT is an empirically-supported treatment shown to be effective at helping people who are actively suicidal. There are several clinics in our community where you can get high quality full model DBT. Please let me know if would like referrals to these clinics.
